French Twist
June 6-29 with reception on June 12 (2nd Friday)
Cathie James-Robinson
Since retiring from a life-long career in technical drawing several years ago, Cathie has been a full-time artist. Throughout her life, she has worked in all types of media, including painting, drawing, sculpting with clay, collage, assemblage and fine art photography. Originally a self-taught artist, in 2008 she attended American River College full time in the Art and Photography departments. There she received degrees in Art and Art New Media as well as the Certificate in Freelance Photography. Currently she focuses on painting and sculpting in clay at her studio which is part of a group of artists called Arboretum Art Works. Working independently in their own studios, they also participate in the monthly ArtAbout art walks and studio tours in Davis.
You can find Cathie most days in her studio, either deeply engrossed in a complex painting, working on a detailed sculpture or simply enjoying the fun of creating her small hand-built ceramics. Her succulent pots and vases continue to be very popular at The Artery. One can often see a new design there on each visit to the gallery. Her original paintings and giclée prints can also be found in her space at The Artery. Cathie loves to paint all things nature and is particularly drawn to the plant life and birds of the wetlands. She also includes bees, flowers and dragonflies in much of her work.
Cathie continues to show her new work along with her daughter, Amanda Cadelago. Having both visited France in recent years, Cathie and Amanda decided on a French theme for this current show, titled “French Twist”. Cathie will have paintings and ceramics in the show as usual, and Amanda will be showing her beautiful paintings
Amanda Cadelago
Amanda Cadelago paints playful interiors, collected objects, florals, birds, and animals that reflect the beauty and meaning we attach to the things around us. Her work explores the emotional pull of color, design, memory, and personal symbolism through vibrant compositions that balance warmth, humor, and curiosity. .
Each painting begins with a carefully planned and constructed digital source built from gathered objects, photographs, patterns, and collected inspirations. By layering and rearranging these elements, she creates imagined spaces that feel both familiar and dreamlike. From those sources, Amanda creates an interpretation that evolves through a mixed-media process of loose underpainting, acrylic, and oil paint, allowing structure and spontaneity to exist together.
I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Sacramento and an Associate degree in Design from Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. Alongside my work as a painter, I work in graphic design and marketing, influences that continue to shape my strong sense of composition and color.
I have exhibited in multiple joint exhibitions with my mom, artist Cathie James-Robinson, at The Artery and became a member of the gallery in 2025. French Twist continues my exploration of art, interiors, beauty, and playful storytelling through a distinctly colorful lens.
