Please follow the project on Social Media! Instagram: @contentartistbooks@arterydavis FaceBook: The Artery of Davis

The Artery Gallery in Davis proudly announces the opening of its highly anticipated "Content Artist Book Exhibition," a juried show that redefines artistic boundaries by featuring an array of captivating artist books from across the nation. This exhibition marks the second installment of its kind in Davis, following in the footsteps of it’s inaugural presentation in 2021.

Exploring Creativity Through Diverse Materials and Relevant Themes

From September 1 - 25, the Artery Gallery will become a sanctuary for art enthusiasts, book lovers, and creative minds alike. The "Content Artist Book Exhibition" presents an unparalleled collection of artist books that push the boundaries of traditional artistic mediums. Each piece is a testament to the artists' boundless imagination, voice and skillful manipulation of materials, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the tactile and visual journey of these unique creations.

The exhibited artist books are a symphony of diverse materials, unexpected artifacts, and contemporary themes that reflect the pulse of our time. Pages come alive with an intriguing interplay of textures, colors, and dimensions, capturing the essence of innovation. Themes range from social commentary and environmental awareness to personal narratives and cultural exploration, providing a thought-provoking lens through which to view the world.

A National Celebration of Artistic Excellence

Hailing from different corners of the country, the participating artists have poured their hearts and minds into crafting these exceptional artist books. This remarkable exhibition underscores the Artery Gallery's commitment to fostering a dynamic creative community that transcends geographic boundaries and celebrates the power of artistic expression.

"We are thrilled to bring together these exceptional artist books under one roof, providing a platform for artists to share their unique voices and perspectives," says Adele Shaw, the curator of the exhibition. "The 'Content Artist Book Exhibition' showcases the incredible diversity of national talent as well as in our region, serving as a testament to the enduring relevance of the artist book as a form of artistic expression."

In addition to the 44 juried book entries, there will be four artist books by invitation. We’re thrilled to be able to exhibit books by artists Betsy Davids and Betty Nelson, respected mentors of our two jurors, Nikki Thompson of Deconstructed Artichoke Press in Sacramento and Adele Shaw of Circle A Studio in Davis. Our jurors will also have books in the exhibit.

Resiliency

The initial concepts for Resiliency were formed during the political turmoil, ardent division, and uncertainty in this country brought on by the previous administration. I began to make sketches as a way to process these difficult times. Fishing Tales from Paradise Lake
Car Rides down to Whiskey Flats
Feather River Childhood Excursion to Honey Run Bridge
2022

These are images of my childhood and visiting my grandparents who lived in Paradise, California—fishing at Paradise Lake and the Feather River, Whiskey Flats; trips to the Honeyrun Bridge. Although I do not live in Paradise, my aunt and cousins still do. Their lives and homes were devastated by the fire.

These pieces are my reflection on childhood, family, and global warming. The line drawing is letterpress printed, while the color is done with a technique called kitchen table lithography. The colors of the thread and ink are meant to represent before and after the fire.

Drawings from 1979 in Six Volumes
2023

This series of artist books were produced from drawings I made in 1979 prior to attending graduate school at UC Davis. These original drawings were stored in a loft for 40 years and were unrolled in 2020. They have now taken on a new life as a series of books. The focus is pencil drawings of friends and acquaintances. Each book has a unique theme - Heads, Hands, Feet, Bodies, Chairs & Clothes and Abstraction. This series of six books was part of a retrospective of drawings that concluded my 34 year career teaching drawing at American River College in Sacramento.

Bugs and Bandages Volumes 1 + 2
2020

The original paintings in this set were inspired by a book from the 1940’s which depicts proper ways to apply bandages to the human body. A comparison is made with the exoskeleton of bugs, which in itself is a protective layer.  These drawings consider different human body parts alongside the parts of different types of beetles.

These drawings were comforting to me after decades of my life spent dealing with painful, raw and worried skin on my hands. To my dismay, doctors assumed it was caused by the art materials I used! This story has an easy resolution; it turned out the irritation was an allergic reaction to milk.

Aprox 7” x 10.5” x 2” Each book comes with it’s own pillow box

Original paintings on Arches watercolor paper mounted to Masonite. Ink, collage, encaustic wax, antique wall paper

Celebrating the Enchanting World of Feline Majesty and Mysticism
Group Show: Members and Guests
July 7 – July 31, 2023

Celebrating feline beauty, grace and allure this show opens on July 7 and continues through July 31, with a reception on July 14 from 7 to 9 pm.

Cat lovers, this one’s for you! The exhibit captures the sheer power and elegance of wild cats and the endearing charm of domestic companions – from prowling tigers in lush landscapes to sweet house cats curled up in cozy corners. Fluffy cats, fierce cats, funny cats, big cats and bitty cats. Using a diversity of mediums, our artists pay homage to these iconic and enigmatic animals.

Adele Shaw states: “We hope to create a shared experience that connects people with the fascinating and mystical qualities of cats. We thought it was a good time to have a little fun!“.

Off the Floor and on the Wall

Handwoven Creations and Artistic Expressions by Lisa M. Erskine, MFA, and Compatriots

June 2 – July 3, 2023    Reception: Friday, June 9, 7-9 pm
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Off the Floor and on the Wall with Lisa Erskine's installation of rag rugs, double weaves and other woven textiles.   She is joined by Jerri Erskine-Zilbert showing handwoven creations and Blayney Breckenridge with
clay art.

Lisa uses many different weaving techniques including Card Weaving and Doubleweave Pick Up.  As she pushes the edge of color and pattern, her images often emerge as landscapes or abstract art.  Blankets, drawings, and poetry will also adorn the gallery walls.

Jerri credits Lisa, her mother-in-law, for introducing her to weaving. In this show she demonstrates her unique style. Blayney’s cunning little Habit Homes are perfect for a garden glen and maybe little leprechauns.  This June, the gallery overflows with summer colors, cooled by cool blues and greens.

DIVERGENT, An Exhibition of Form & Shadow

New Sculptures by Louise McGowan Bezark

March 31 – April 24, 2023

Reception: 7- 9pm, Friday, April 14

The Artery is pleased to present DIVERGENT, An Exhibition of Form and Shadow, featuring new gourd sculptures by Louise McGowan Bezark.  STEM, one of her new series, uses the twist and angle of the gourd’s natural stem as a feature. Her love of color, texture and form shows in one of her favorite pieces, Divergence.

Louise has also expanded her use of open carving and piercing of gourds in a new LIT Series of illuminated pieces.  Her MICRO series showcases precious little lidded vessels, a favorite of collectors.

Clay Selfie

Ceramics by Janine Echabarne

Dates: March 3 - 27, 2023
Reception: Friday, March 10, 7-9 pm

Janine Echabarne, having joined The Artery in 1986, has been primarily known for her jewelry.  With this exhibit, she is making her ceramic debut.

She has been creating with clay since the pandemic lock down in 2020. Unable to attend the community college ceramics open studio, she set up her own home studio, fulfilling a dream deferred for most of her life. New channels of creativity opened through clay. The functional pieces are sculptural planters for cactus and succulents.

The purely figurative pieces reflect the environment and inner states of being human, subtly informed by dreams and Buddhist practice.

The exhibition also includes simple unset stone pendants and designs in metal that are a bit risky in their designs.

Janine is delighted to be joined by two guest artists: painter, Eddie O. Rodriguez and collage artist, Kiyono Kishi
