About The Artery

The Artery is a member-owned cooperative art gallery that has been a part of the Davis community since 1974. We represent the work of local and regional artists in a wide variety of media, including ceramics, glass, wood, fiber arts, jewelry, photography, painting, sculpture, and more. We are looking for an enthusiastic, dependable team member who enjoys working with people and appreciates handcrafted art.

Position Summary

The Gallery Sales Associate is responsible for providing exceptional customer service while helping maintain a welcoming, clean, and professional gallery environment. This position assists customers with purchases, carefully handles original artwork, processes sales transactions, and supports the daily operation of the gallery.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Welcome every visitor with a warm, friendly, and professional attitude.

  • Provide outstanding customer service and assist customers in selecting artwork and gifts.

  • Learn about the artists and artwork represented in the gallery to answer customer questions and make recommendations.

  • Process sales accurately using the gallery's point-of-sale (POS) system.

  • Package artwork and fragile items carefully to ensure they arrive home safely.

  • Handle original artwork with care, including removing, rehanging, and adjusting paintings and other display pieces, using a step ladder safely when necessary.

  • Assist with receiving and displaying new artwork and merchandise.

  • Restocking display inventory as needed.

  • Contacting artists as needed.

  • Help maintain attractive gallery displays and a neat sales floor.

  • Perform opening and closing procedures.

  • Answer telephone inquiries and assist customers in person.

  • Maintain a clean and inviting gallery by performing light janitorial duties, including but not limited to:

    • Sweeping and mopping floors

    • Vacuuming

    • Dusting displays and shelving

    • Sweeping front sidewalk

    • Cleaning windows and glass doors

    • Cleaning and stocking the restroom

    • Emptying trash and recycling

    • Work cooperatively with gallery management, artists, and fellow employees.

    • Assist during special events, receptions, and community activities as needed.

    • Follow gallery policies and maintain confidentiality regarding business operations.

Qualifications

Strong preference for candidates that have:

  • Previous retail sales and customer service experience.

  • Experience operating a point-of-sale (POS) system or the ability to learn quickly.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Dependable, punctual, and self-motivated.

  • Ability to work independently while also functioning as part of a team.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Basic computer skills.

  • Professional appearance and positive attitude.

Additional experience preferred in:

  • Background or interest in visual arts, fine crafts, museums, galleries, or creative retail.

  • Experience gift wrapping or packaging fragile merchandise.

  • Experience merchandising or creating attractive retail displays.

  • Knowledge of Davis and the local arts community is a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to intermittently stand and walk for up to four and half hours at a time.

  • Ability to safely lift and carry framed artwork, boxes, and merchandise weighing up to 10 pounds.

  • Ability to safely climb and work from a step ladder to hang, remove, or adjust artwork and displays.

  • Ability to reach overhead to hang and remove artwork from display walls.

  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and perform routine cleaning tasks.

  • Manual dexterity to safely handle delicate and breakable artwork.

Ability to safely wrap, package, and transport fragile artwork and gift items.
