COMMON THREADS, What Unites Us is a collaboration between Lucy Boland of Bluewater Silk and Louise McGowan Bezark of Journey Vessels. The result is Lucy’s collection of reimagined vintage Japanese textiles and Louise’s fine art gourds. Lucy’s focus is on history and repurposing, and Louise emphasizes nature and transformation. This show celebrates craftsmanship, East Asian influence, tradition, and human connection.

Journey Vessels
Each gourd begins as a simple organic vessel, carrying within it a unique shape, texture, and history. Through carving, pyrography, painting, and careful embellishment, I look not to transform its essence, but to reveal it. My work is deeply influenced by the quiet beauty of East Asian aesthetics, where simplicity, balance, and reverence for the natural world invite moments of reflection and stillness.

Lucy Boland
Bluewater Silk
For the past 20 years my focus has been on the ancient textile traditions of Japan. I began collecting with the idea of re-purposing damaged or unusable kimonos and obis. Traditional textiles reflect the culture of their time and place, made with great care and holding meaning for the maker and user. They are ephemeral and often overlooked, which I believe only adds to their appeal.
